| 30 Sep 06 - New Exhaust |
| After getting hassled
by police and neighbors, I decided it was time to do something about
the exhaust - MAKE IT QUIETER!
Since I was in there anyway, Dynomax
Magnum Race Bullets were welded up in place of the FFR glass packs,
ought to give it a real kick! Dynomax states a 2-4 db reduction
in sound over open headers.
I did not want the metallic sound
of the Lobaks.

  |
| The inside of the
Factory Five pipes actually steps down to about 2.5 inches.
I ordered the 23 1/2" long 3x3 Bullets
from Jegs, $40 each. Probably should have gotten the 2.5x2.5
and flared the neck to fit the inside of the collectors.
|
 |
 |
| Maybe I'll just
weld them back up like this.... |
You can see the Bullet has
many little holes inside it. The ceramic packing is guaranteed
never to burn out. |
|
| Two sets of Car Chemistry
inserts is what really makes a difference. Car Chemistry claims
the 3 disk insert will reduce sound 5-7 decibels. We installed two
sets of inserts in each pipe, one in the collector and one at the
tip. I have no idea how at this point how it will affect the
engine power output. |
  |
| I angled the tips down
about 10 degrees, its really not very noticeable on the car.
|
 |
| Done -- looks just like
the FFR pipes. Overall the pipe is about 4" longer than stock. The
extra length is at the collector. |
 |
| Here is the inserts
at the tip. Note: The proper sized inserts can NOT be installed
thru the angle-cut open end, the pipe must be cut.
With two sets of inserts in
each pipe, the car was definitely quieter a idle and midrange, but
sound like it had asthma.
12 Nov 06 Update: I have since removed
the insert from the end of the pipe. I did not like the sound and
it seemed to stifle the car a bit.
|
 |
| With one
set of inserts and the Race Bullets, the car sounded better, it
is LOUD and has a roaring sound to it, almost like an F1 car. Still
looking around for decent performance mufflers at a reasonable price.
I only want to cut the pipes apart one more time. |

11 June 07 - Heat Shields |
| Completed pipes with
heat shields. They are coated with satin black BBQ paint.
I do have another set of mufflers
(glass packs) that I will weld in over the winter.
