Drive Train

8 Oct  05 Drive Shaft Safety loop

I purchased a driveshaft loop on eBay for 10 bucks and modified it to fit.

29 Mar 06 - Transmission

The T5 transmission ready to be shipped to Gordon Levy for rebuild. Its a six cylinder model, which is not stout enough for a high power V8. When it comes back, it should be able to hand anything the 302 can throw at it -- and only 70 pounds or so vice 120 for a Tremec. My goal is to keep the car as light as reasonably possible -- hopefully 2100 lbs or under.

21 May 06 - Transmission is Back!

I still have to purchase a new bell housing and fork, the Racing T5 uses the shorter Fox style input shaft and associated bell housing. The trans uses case hardened gears and has a revised 2:95-1 first gear -- making 1st gear more usable with the 3.73 differential gears.

If all of the math is correct, calculated top speed is 218 MPH at 6500 RPM (yeah right) 60 MPH should give 1788 RPM in 5th. The gear ratios are 2.95, 1.94, 1.34, 1.00,  0.63.
Meanwhile, I test fit the RCI universal ballistic blanket and other parts. I was hoping to get away with a less expensive and lighter aluminum Fox bell housing vice the heavy steel Ford Racing or Lakewood models. It looks like the blanket will work.
A $99 Steeda Sport shifter completes the combination. The shift stops still need to be set on it. No need for the more expensive Tri-Ax shifter, the car will see very limited drag strip use.

29 May 06 - Clutch

Here is the Zoom Kevlar HP48-1 clutch. It was recommended to me by Gordon Levy.  I had to ream the locating holes a little to get it to fit over the Fidanza flywheel dowels.

Top

The Fox clutch fork at the top is quite a bit smaller than the SN95.  So is the bell housing; the blanket now wraps completely around it, where as before the first strap was too short. The blanket is not tight against the fork, there is plenty of slack to allow the clutch to operate. All the frame mods I did so the SN95 bellhousing would clear the frame are now for nothing.

ID your Bell Housing

The SN95  housing has "5.0" cast into it in large numbers on the top, while there are no markings on the FOX units. The FOX housing are physically smaller than the SN95 bell housings.

The other  difference is the transmission input shaft for the two housings. The Fox trans has a shorter input shaft and the SN95 has a longer one. If you try to use a SN95 trans on FOX bell housing it will not seat all the way against the bell housing. If you use a fox trans on a SN95 bell housing, the shorter input shaft will not go into the pilot bearing.

30 May 06 - Driveshaft
The trick to getting the IRS driveshaft installed is to remove the trans mount bolts and jack the trans tail shaft up until the splines align. It installs from the top.
Here's a drawing of my measurements, I did not use the measurements in the FFR manual..
The shop that shortened and balanced the driveshaft  recommended non-greaseable U-joints. Supposedly they are a little stronger  because they do not have the grease cavity.
The parking brake mechanism hit the A shaped transmission mount -- of all things. Its hard to tell in the photo, but it hangs down by about an 1/8 or so. I took it apart and milled a little off the bottom side of all the parts and rounded the corners.
