Axle

 14 Nov 09 8.8. Axle

NO we just couldn't purchase an axle! Where's the fun in that??

 Parts Ordered 28 Nov

We toyed  with adding C-clip eliminators, bigger 9"  bearings, axle-differential braces, an axle truss, or replacing  the stock axle tubes with beefier ones, but then decided against any of these options. The coupe is about 600 pounds lighter than the mustang, so the overall forces acting on it are reduced. Unless we run big drag slicks, the tires will spin long before we can do any damage to the axle or its components. Besides c-clip eliminators have a tendency to leak and a truss can warp the housing.

28 Dec 09 Lobotomy

A few minutes with the sawzall and torch made short work of the excess brackets.  It took more than a few minutes of grinding and sanding to get the areas smooth.

Note: if you take the torch to the axle brackets, be careful to keep about 1/8-1/4" away from the tube to prevent accidently nicking or warping the tubes.

28 Feb 2010. Axle

Before we get to far along and forget, the shocks are set to full firm.

Here the 3-link brackets have been blasted clean of powder coating in preparation for the final installation, welding, and new paint.

14 Mar 2010. 3-link Frame Brace

Probably not necessary, but good peace of mind....

An extra brace for the 3 Link Bracket is welded to the frame

The 3 link shock brackets are welded with several small welds in addition to the bolts.

13 June 2010. Banana Bracket Brace

I added a brace to the banana bracket to support it from side to side and prevent twisting. In the past there was one or two instances of the bracket bending under high horsepower engines. I'll do the final welding after the axle is removed from the frame for finishing.
